Call for applications GTOT Grant for Projects by Young Scholars

Funding period: 2024-2025

The Society for Turkic, Ottoman and Turkish Studies invites its members to submit applications for the funding of small-scale projects. Generally, all proposals aiming at supporting young scholars and/or Turkology as a study program will be considered. Projects that develop teaching or research technically, methodologically or in terms of content in an original, creative, and critical way will be considered. Projects that are not included in other funding lines are favoured.

This includes the following or similar formats:

  • workshops / summer (winter) schools focused on specific topics such as digital humanities, archival work, source work etc.
  • interdisciplinary (teaching) projects
  • preparation and presentation of projects / research results (new media, podcasts etc.)
  • supporting students wishing to participate with a panel in the Turkologentag 2025

The GTOT finances original individual projects with annually up to 3.000 EURO. The duration of each project shall not exceed 6 months.

Application requirements

Applications can be submitted by students and early-career scholars (incl. PhD holders up to 3 years after graduation) under the condition that they enjoy support from the academic institution they are affiliated with (a brief letter of recommendation written by a professor must be included).

We also welcome project ideas developed jointly by several academic institutions.

Selection criteria

  • clear scholarly focus
  • feasible and transparent financial plan
  • support of the respective academic institution (department)
  • GTOT-membership (at least of one of the applicants)
  • projects such as organization of lecture series or financial support to libraries will not be considered

Application procedure

Project proposals of max. 2 pages to be sent by June 24, 2024 to bewerbung@gtot.org (date as of receipt of the email).

The grant will be awarded once or twice a year. Accepted projects and their results will be presented at the Turkologentag 2025 in Mainz (e.g. in form of a poster presentation).

The evaluation of submitted applications and selection of projects to be supported will be carried out by a special commission.
