Call for papers for a special issue of Diyâr 2023 

A Century of Gender Equality Struggles in Turkey: Feminist History Revisited

We particularly welcome papers that expand the field of women’s and gender history in the following directions: documentation of cross-border activism, influence, and exchange; inclusion of understudied groups, time periods, and forms of activism; and cross-cultural and comparative analyses. A publication-oriented workshop is planned take place in 1-2 July 2022 in Zurich where we will discuss each contribution. Articles will be submitted as part of the special issue “A Century of Gender Equality Struggles in Turkey: Feminist History Revisited” to the academic journal Diyâr: Journal of Ottoman, Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies on 15 September 2022. Upon submission, a peer-review process will ensue. We expect original research papers dealing with, but not limited to, the following issues:

• Struggles for equality among non-Turkish, non-Muslim, and migrant communities
• Impacts of global gender equality agendas on gender politics and equality struggles
• Strategies of resistance and empowerment within small communities (e.g. family, work- place, village, province)
• Cross-cultural aspects and concepts in women’s and gender history
• Emotional histories of gender equality struggles
• Women in social movements and social justice struggles
• LGBTI+ and queer histories
• Struggles around sexuality (including sex work)
• Reproductive rights and politics of motherhood

Please submit your abstract and short bio to Dr. Elife Biçer-Deveci and Dr. Selin Çağatay by 28 February 2022. Abstracts should be 500 words maximum and include the title of the paper, aim of your research, and some words about your methodological approach and empirical data.

Call for papers for a special issue of Diyâr 2023 

Borders, Territory, and the Turkish Republic 

Diyâr welcomes paper proposals for a special issue on issues of borders and territoriality in the Turkish Republic. This special issue investigates how concepts related to borders, bordering, and territoriality can help us understand the trajectory of one hundred years of Turkish republican history. The editors seek to connect scholarship on the history of borders and borderlands with innovations in the way geographers have critically analyzed territory today. Together with our contributors, we seek to understand how spatial notions of territoriality govern the organization and diffusion of power. We also seek studies that, on their own or in concert with other studies, contribute to a multi-scalar approach to notions of  territoriality in the Turkish Republic. We particularly welcome proposals that critically approach concepts and notions of territoriality—e.g., vatan, taşra, Doğu, etc.—or that further develop scholarship on borders and bordering practices in Turkey. GTOT Call for Special Issue Proposals

100 years of the Republic of Turkey and the engineering of a nation

On the occasion of the centenary of the Republic of Turkey in 2023 GTOT/Diyâr welcomes proposals for up to two special issues that are dedicated to the trajectory of the Republic of Turkey in the past decades. Innovative ventures into understanding the Republic of Turkey in its historical, social, and cultural complexities are particularly welcome.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Transnational / global impact / perception of Kemalist Turkey
• Beyond the center(s): Provincial Kemalism
• Writing and printing in Kemalist Turkey
• Transnational Histories, Cultures, and Literatures
• Gender and Sexuality in Turkey
• The making of religious and ethnic minorities in Modern Turkey
• Cultural Heritage and cultural policy
• Environmental Humanities / Environmental History
• Political Islam, right-wing / left-wing politics
• The 1960s – a lost chance that never existed?
• The role of the military
• Civil society and social transformation
• Turkey under the AKP
• The question of continuity from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic
• Cultural trajectories including religious change
• Facing trauma: Genocides and state violence in the Republic of Turkey
• Migration, Deportation, and Exile in Turkey’s history

Guideline

The proposal for a special issue – including adescription of the project (2,000–3,000 words) and either abstracts of planned contributions or a call for papers – should be submitted to the editorial board. The editorial board may express its interest in the proposal, but a final decision regarding acceptance will be based on the submission of the whole issue to the editorial board, as well as on the peer review of each submitted paper.

A special issue typically consists of 6–8 papers. A paper should normally not exceed a length of about 60,000 characters. Papers may be in English, French or German (click https://www.diyar.nomos.de/en/guidelines-for-authors for detailed guidelines).

Artikel mit einem Umfang von max. 60 000 Zeichen (inklusive Fußnoten und Leerzeichen), ein Abstract von 150-200 Wörtern sowie (bis zu 6) Schlagworte können bis 15. März 2021 bei Tabea Becker-Bertau (diyar@ergon-verlag.de) eingereicht werden. Diyâr publiziert Beiträge in deutscher, englischer und französischer Sprache. Die Zeitschrift soll durch inhaltliche Fokussierung und hohe Standards beim Peer-Review zu einem international führenden wissenschaftlichen Periodikum der turkologischen und iranistischen Forschung werden.

Diyâr erscheint zweimal im Jahr.
